The Santa Monica College Men's Volleyball team has gotten off to a strong start to the 2026 season. After a couple of tough pre-season losses to the top two teams in the state, the Corsairs have amassed a 9-3 record during the regular season. Freshman outside hitter Demian Anisimov has led the charge offensively and from the service line. He is currently #1 in the state for kills (143) and kills per set (3.97) and #2 in aces per set (0.53). The offense has been primarily facilitated by sophomore setter Ethan Lo, who is currently #1 in the state in assists per set (9.58). On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore libero James Ban has scrappily led the team with 128 digs (#2 in the state) and 3.12 digs per set (#3 in the state). Freshman Jayden Lyons has been turning heads with his early offensive surge and his recent blocking dominance. He is #2 in the state in blocks per set (1.32) and has racked up 105 kills with a hitting percentage of .390.
Although many Corsairs have had remarkable individual performances thus far, it is the strength and depth of this team's bond that makes them truly special. "This is a really amazing group of guys. They are always supporting one another and have proven to be great teammates all along the way. I am so grateful to work with this team that is committed to putting each other before themselves," said Head Coach Chris Chown. This caring bond is clearly witnessed when you see the enthusiasm of the team to cheer on each and every person that steps on the court. "It is a next man up mentality," Chown shared. "It is cool to see how excited they are for their teammates to get opportunities to play in a match, even if it means they are the one sitting as a result."
As the men in blue embark on the second half of the season, they look to finish strongly and make a deep playoff run. "We are just trying to get better every day," Chown said. "If we stay focused, work hard, stick together, and cultivate a spirit of gratitude, I believe that we will have a successful season."
