Santa Monica's Volleyball Starts Off Strong

SMC Women's Volleyball Coach Christian Cammayo reflected on his team's performance so far this season, describing them as competitive and resilient despite facing one of the toughest schedules in recent memory. The squad opened the season with an impressive 8–0 run, including wins over nationally ranked opponents, but tough matches against top-ranked teams have since exposed areas for growth.

Christian emphasized that these challenges have been valuable learning opportunities. "You can't really learn about yourselves until you're pushed," he said, noting that even in losses, the team has discovered ways to improve.

Several standout performances have highlighted the season so far. Middle blocker Nicole Lankton posted remarkable numbers in the team's recent match, recording 20 kills on just 13 swings. Freshman outside hitter Mia Whitlock and sophomore Reese Luke have also delivered error-free offensive outings, demonstrating the depth of the roster.

The team has battled through injuries but continues to focus on daily improvement. Cammayo praised his veteran leaders, including Annah Legaspi, and stressed the importance of preparation, mindset, and consistency. "We have the talent," he said, "we just need to stay healthy and keep working toward our potential."

Looking ahead, Coach Christian remains optimistic about the remainder of the season. He believes the team is closer to reaching the top than results may show, with narrow five-set and four-set losses proving just how competitive they are. "We preach trusting the process," Christian said. "If the team commits to that, we'll be able to live with whatever the results are."

The team is excited to return home this Friday, September 19th, to face conference rival Moorpark in what promises to be a high-energy match.
